Global Leader in Glucono Delta Lactone, Roquette Boosts Production Capacity

GDL

Roquette is supporting increasing GDL use worldwide with a new production facility at its Cassano Spinola1 site in Italy. The facility, which has been in operation for several months, meets strict quality standards and is aimed at the growing demand for GDL, notably in cheese-making applications.

According to Euromonitor International, the cheese sector is growing at an AAGR2  of 2.5% and soft cheeses at 3%. Although GDL is the preferred acid for these applications, the main obstacle to its use over recent years has been its limited availability.

Roquette’s new facility paves the way for further growth in GDL use. In addition to Increased availability, Roquette’s GDL also meets very high quality standards.
With the new production circuit - FSSC3  2200 certified, Roquette can guarantee an impeccable level of product quality, particularly for purity and consistency. Moreover, a special polyethylene bag has been designed for packaging the product.  Incredibly strong and watertight, it preserves the quality of the product during shipping and under variable atmospheric conditions, preventing it from becoming compacted,” explains Christine CHAINER, Fermentation Product Manager at Roquette.

Currently a variety of different products are substituted for GDL, depending on the application. Examples are citric acid and lactic ferment but neither can match GDL’s advantages, i e its beneficial effect on texture, yield ratio, sodium content and use.  Its neutral flavour is also a major advantage.

Roquette has been manufacturing GDL since the late 1980s, and has regularly stepped up its production capacity to meet the growing need. The company exports GDL worldwide and to support its customers is also gradually expanding its network of technical experts. “Our additional capacity is different because of the cutting-edge technology used in our production equipment. We want to keep our customers satisfied over the long term and are always looking for ways of improving our GDL ” concludes CHAINER.
